Enrica Scurati

Enrica Scurati is an Italian illustrator from Milan whose work I saw at the Bologna Children's Book Fair and these are her very stylized and surreal illustrations for Little Red Riding Hood.
"I am inspired by the art of Keith Haring, because I admire his work and creativity.
I have stylized the characters, assembling even stationery objects, such as the head of the wolf is a stapler, using a technique that could represent the effect of graffiti wall.
This combined with unreal looking figures, recalls a surreal world as by the way is for me is the reign of fairy tales." Enrica Scurati

Polly Noakes

Polly Noakes has just graduated from Anglia Ruskin MA Illustration course in Cambridge. I was lucky to meet her at the Bologna Children's Book Festival last week.
"This is a picture book project that I created for the MA in Children’s Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art, from which I have just graduated.
It emerged from sketching the New Forest where I live. During my first semester on the MA I filled 7 sketchbooks recording life and landscapes of the New Forest and connected to a very different world than Cambridge.
I wanted to create an atmospheric picture book reflecting the textures, light, colours and characters that I had sketched between autumn and winter. The woodsman is based on local charcoal maker Dave, who allowed me to sketch him whilst he worked.

I have always wanted to illustrate this classic tale and I did so, not with any outcome in mind, other than indulge my own creativity." Polly Noakes

Marija Vuletić

Croatia was the country of honour at this years Bologna Children’s Book Fair and Marija Vuletić was exhibited as part of their Living Waters, Aquamarine Selection exhibition with her fluid loose watercolour illustrations of Little Red Riding Hood. These reminded me of my friend Lizzy Hobbs water colour animations in their style and gruesome humour.
