Kaye Blegvad

Kaye Blegvad's new book 'Dog Years' is about depression, Kaye's way of allowing people a window to see what depression is like is by creating the metaphor of owning a bad dog.

Depression is like owning a bad dog. This is a book about learning to live with that dog, training it, making peace with it, and realizing you aren't alone. 

“So many people don’t really understand mental health issues, and are so fast to judge someone who’s suffering as being lazy, or weak, or self-destructive. It’s hard to communicate what you’re experiencing when you’re in that dark place, having something solid, and from a third party, can make a big difference. That’s what motivated me to do the book – hearing that this story has helped other people feel less alone has, in turn, made me feel less alone, too.”Kaye Blegvad

 Kaye developed the book after delivering a surprisingly successful talk to the Society of Illustrators  on the theme of survival. The talk flowed easily and then developed naturally into a book. It is not Little Red Riding Hood but it so easily could be, that I have included it here.

Bernadette Watts

Bernadette Watts Little Red Riding Hood was first published fifty years ago by the Oxford University Press in 1968. There is a charming interview with Bernadette about her early life and first steps into being a published children's illustrator. Born in 1942 Bernadette was a shy child, late to go to school she was encouraged creatively by her mother who was an artist and her father who was an architect. She studied at the Maidstone Art School in Kent with Brian Wildsmith as a tutor.

 Katherine Quinn's intricate, decorative illustrations of Little Red Riding Hood reveal her love of the natural world. Katherine is an illustrator and designer based in New Zealand who creates patterns for commercial papers and textiles and has some beautiful children's books.

Tongue swollen with lies

This is a strange image and a stranger idea, it is about a tongue swollen with lies. 

I was thinking about the 'big lie' theory, the propaganda technique used by the Nazi's in the second world war and now the endless lie technique being used by the current incumbent of the white house. 

Little Red Ridding Hood always seems to be my preferred visual tool for expressing horror and revulsion at events and politics. In this image the wolf can eat no more because his tongue is swollen from lying too much. We can but dream and draw and hope for this to end soon.

Julio Antonio Blasco López

Julio Antonio Blasco López is a Spanish illustrator from Valencia who works using a montage of different materials, ideas and techniques. This version of little red has been created like a stamp album, using extremely accomplished full colour illustrations and collages of sketches, it is a rich, vibrant book with new things to find at every reading.
