Kevin Peterson

This is not little red riding hood, and yet to me the paintings of Kevin Peterson very much encapsulate one of the streams of interpretation of this ancient fairytale. The coupling of the wild with the young innocent human in a decaying urban setting is a modern day fairytale, an observation, a post-warning of our destruction and the demise of all we hold sacred.

"I’m trying to capture a moment. These moments usually contain a stark contrast between subject and environment. The innocence of a child against a ragged, defiled backdrop. I put a child in an environment that you wouldn’t normally see a young person alone, I think it’s a metaphor for growing up. Its about that stuff we all go through that forms who we are as adults. Little traumas or sometimes big ones, all of those things that form our defenses and cause us to build walls and inner strength. Time is another important aspect of my work. The way we change and the way our environment changes around us." Kevin Peterson

Matthew Cordell

With a clear visual homage to Little Red Riding Hood, these illustrations are from Matthew Cordell's 'Wolf In The Snow' which was published earlier this year, a project that started with the picture above. Matthews research for this book about a little girl and a wolf cub who both get lost in the snow took him on a journey of wonder and knowledge including the amazing Yellowstone Wolf Project and a complete rediscovery and understanding of wolves.

This silent book has won the Boston Globe-Horn Book award 2017 and is nominated for many other awards.

Margaret Gebbie Hays

   Fig 1(above): Margaret G Hay's 1913

This second paper doll postcard of Little Red Riding Hood is by Margaret G Hays.
Margaret Gebbie Hays (1874-1925) illustrated many children's books and many postcards with dolls that could be cut out and dressed.
Margaret was the older sister of Grace Drayton, who was also an illustrator.
There is less information available on Magaret G Hays than on her sister Grace who is famous for creating the Campbell Soup Kids advertisements 1905 and the Dolly Dingle paper dolls that were published in the Pictorial Review a women's magazine.
